Avon Oaks Country Club is once again the home of the annual Fairview Park/West Shore Chamber of Commerce Charity Golf Outing. It will be held on Monday, August 8 with a shotgun start at 11:00 a.m. All proceeds raised at this event will support the Education Fund at both chambers. These funds supply a college scholarship to a worthy student in each of the local school systems - Fairview High School, Westlake High School and Bay High.

FP Board of Ed Votes for Option 4

On Tuesday, June 21, the Fairview Park City Schools Board of Education unanimously voted to pursue Option 4 of the proposed District Facilities Plan, which includes renovations and additions to Fairview High School and Mayer Middle School, updates at Gilles-Sweet Elementary, and upgrades and additions at Parkview Early Education Center. The BOE also approved the two resolutions required to place a bond issue/permanent improvement levy to fund the plan on the November 8 ballot.

Annual RR Bike To School Challenge Underway

May is National Bicycle Month. For over 1,200 middle school and elementary school students in Rocky River, that means Bike To School Month as the annual Rocky River Bike To School Challenge returns for the sixth year. The Rocky River Bike To School Challenge began in 2011 at Rocky River Middle School, and expanded to Kensington Elementary School in 2015.

The Bike Challenge for Rocky River Middle School began on Monday, May 2 and ends on Friday, May 20. The one-week Bike Challenge for Kensington Elementary School begins on Monday, May 16 and ends on Friday, May 20.

Winners of Rotary’s annual Speech, Music, and Visual Arts Contest were honored at an awards ceremony in March at the Beck Center for the Arts. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lakewood and Rocky River, the competition showcases the incredible talents of students attending one of five high schools – Lakewood, Lutheran West, Magnificat, Rocky River, and St. Edward.

Speech contest semi-finals and finals were held in March. Speeches were of original content and based on “The Four-Way Test of Rotary,” which asks, “Is it the truth, Is it fair to all concerned, Will it build goodwill and better friendships, and Will it be beneficial to all concerned?”

College Club West is offering tuition grants for the Fall 2016-Summer 2017 academic year. A minimum of $2,000 will be awarded to qualified women applicants. The applicant must be at least 25 years old, currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program and reside in the counties of Cuyahoga, Lorain or Medina. College Club members and relatives are ineligible.

Haan Places Third in Business Competition

Lutheran West Junior Sadie Haan was a member of a student team that won third place at the recent Tiffin University Entrepreneurship Business Plan Competition. The team won a $250 scholarship. Haan was a member of a team made up of two Tiffin University students and a high school student from the Tiffin area. Haan lives in Rocky River.

A New Scarf Made with Love

The Westshore Young Leaders annual holiday celebration meeting took on new significance as the teens made no-sew fleece scarves for the children living in the OhioGuidestone Residential Treatment Campus at the Berea Children's Home. The young leaders cut, frayed and placed beads on each scarf.  A special touch was added with a “Made with love especially for YOU” sticker that was carefully placed for the recipient to see.

FHS “Stream Team” Wins Adelstein Award

In November, the Fairview High School “Stream Team” was awarded the Hope and Stanley Adelstein Student Environmental Leadership Award for Excellence by the Earth Day Coalition. The Stream Team is a group of FHS environmental science students dedicated to promoting the understanding that we are all part of a watershed and that clean water is essential to our region’s health and economy.

The Adelstein Award was given to the FHS Stream Team for their role in and commitment to the Coe Creek Streambank Restoration Project.

A Winning Student Project: Cleaning Up Lake Erie

On Thursday, September 3, at 7 p.m. the Fairview Park Democratic Club will welcome Ohio Board of Education member, Roslyn Painter-Goffi, who will address critical education issues in our state and community. Painter-Goffi is a retired teacher and librarian with over 30 years of experience working in public schools. The week-long training will take place at the JW Marriott.

Annual Bike To School Challenge Kicks Off in May

Over 5,000 middle school, high school, and elementary school students in Rocky River, Bay Village and Medina will participate in the 2015 Bike To School Challenge in May. The award-winning program - the biggest bike-to-school program in the U.S. - returns for its fifth year at Rocky River schools, eighth year at Bay Village schools, and its fourth year at Medina schools.

Nigmeh Abusbeih-Salti of Rocky River was one of seven students from Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) named to the All-Ohio Community College Academic Team, which comprises top students at the state’s two-year schools.

Dr. Wagner, who most recently served as Director of Human Resources at Lakewood City Schools, has more than 22 years of demonstrated success in various administrative positions in the education field, including principal at Lakewood High School, Principal of Clearview Jr./Sr. High School and Dean of Students at Lorain High School.

An Early New Year’s for the Westshore Young Leaders

The Lakewood High School Westshore Young Leaders held an early New Year’s ice skating party on Sunday, December 28.  For the third year, the ice skating party was held at the Serpentini Arena at Winterhurst Ice Skating Rink in Lakewood. 

More than 40 middle and high school students from the Westshore School Districts (Bay Village, Fairview Park, Lakewood, North Olmsted, Rocky River and Westlake) enjoyed an afternoon of music, skating and excitement. The students celebrated the upcoming year with party favors and delicious cupcakes.

WYL Hosts 5th Annual Leadership Training

A record number of middle and high school students and staff from Bay Village, Fairview Park, Lakewood, North Olmsted and Rocky River braved the cold and snow to participate in the annual Westshore Young Leaders (WYL) Training event held at the Don Umerley Civic Center in Rocky River in late November.  Over the past five years, the event has drawn almost 400 students in the Westshore District. 

The Westshore Young Leaders Network partnered with McKeon Education Group to facilitate the invigorating day of interactive training.  The quote, If your actions inspire others to dream more and do more, you are a leader” from John Quincy Adams, was the spur for one activity.

Rocky River resident Mireille “Miro” Tabanji — the 2014-2015 Board Student Scholar at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) — can tell you all about perseverance.

In 1980, when Tabanji was 18, she fled war-torn Lebanon with her family and took refuge in Jordan. She left her homeland without graduating from high school, as the fighting often forced her to abandon class.

"For God & Country" Letter Contest

Each school year, the 7th and 8th grade students at Lewis F. Mayer Middle School, St. Angela Merici School, and Messiah Lutheran School compete in a letter writing contest aimed at acknowledging the overseas members of our Armed Forces and expressing gratitude for their sacrifices in keeping the United States safe and free.

Referred to as "For God and Country," this contest received its name from the letter prompt given to students: "Why God, country, and the men and women who serve in our Armed Forces are important to our country’s freedom." The year 2014 marks the 38th year of the For God and Country program.

Magnificat Salutes its National Merit Scholarship Students

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has named two Magnificat High School seniors as National Merit Semifinalists in the 2015 Merit Scholarship Competition, and four as Commended students. Students are chosen on the basis of high scores on the Preliminary SAT (PSAT).

Semifinalists are Caitrin Campbell and Alexandra Norris (seated in photo) and Commended students are Elizabeth Leszcz, Hanleigh Heinzmann, Caitlyn Harrington and Megan Hricovec.

Magnificat Graduates' College Scholarship Offers Exceed $15 Million

On Thursday, May 29, a capacity crowd filled the Magnificat Center for the Performing Arts to watch 176 seniors become the 56th graduating class of Magnificat High School. The graduates, along with their family and friends, heard a beautiful reflection from classmate Catherine Collier—chosen by her peers to deliver this year’s student address. This year's graduating class was offered over $15 million in college scholarships.

Art in Action Masterpieces

The Rocky River District Art Show celebrated its opening night on May 13.  Artwork from every student was showcased in the halls of Rocky River Middle School.  During opening night, 4th graders from Kensington Intermediate School were treated to a very special experience. 

The students worked side-by-side with professional artist, Augusto Bordelois, to create a 4th grade mural.  The 4th grade mural is a tradition at Kensington –  one that promotes class unity and pride.  This project was funded by the Kensington PTA. 

This year’s project was titled “Art in Action” in which the students learned a technique called action painting.

"We are the Majority" Rally

Westshore Young Leaders from Westlake, Rocky River and Lakewood high schools joined more than 100 other high school youth leaders, school officials, resource officers, parents and professionals from Cuyahoga County at the "We are the Majority" Rally in late April.

The purpose of the rally was to raise awareness that the majority of youth make healthy choices and do not use drugs and alcohol. The rally looks to be an annual event for all schools in Cuyahoga County to actively participate.

My First Triathlon!

A few weeks ago, I was in the Kids’ Triathlon at Rocky River Civic Center with my friend Regan. Kids were divided by grade and did activities at different times, but every grade did three activities. I followed the second grade schedule. I even got a bib number, just like an adult triathlete!

Our group’s first event was walking. We walked (or ran) around the gym. We got to listen to dance music while we walked, because walkers shared the gym with dancers. I liked that there were hula hoops in the gym because sometimes the walking got boring.

A Log Roll That Doesn’t Roll Is No Fun!

What do you do with a zip line that doesn’t zip? Or a log roll encased in mulch? Goldwood Primary School PTA decided to rip them out and install dynamic new playground equipment.

To raise funds for the renovation, Goldwood PTA is getting students involved. What do kids really want to do? Watch a group for a little while and the answer is obvious: they want to move. Out of that need for motion came the Kids’ Triathlon. Tweaking the traditional concept, Melissa Walsh took the lead in designing an event that combines walking, reading, and (choice of) dancing or martial arts.

Welcome to Zero Period: An Eighth Grade Math Program

It’s Monday at 7:00 a.m. and about 50 eighth grade boys and girls from Cleveland Catholic diocese schools gather in two Saint Ignatius classrooms for Honors Algebra 1.  They’re committed to learning – and being competitive in mathematics.  Parents are committed too, as they adjust schedules to bring their child to this free program offered since 2010. 

It’s the Eighth Grade Algebra Program (EGAP) and the brainchild of Rev. William J. Murphy, S.J., President of Saint Ignatius High School.  “We saw a clear need for eighth graders to be able to take Algebra 1,” he explains.

AYF Thanks Sunrise Rotary

Several members of the American Youth Foundation at Lakewood High School attended a meeting of the Lakewood Rocky River Sunrise Rotary Club to thank its members for providing scholarships for the Camp Miniwanca Leadership Camp in Michigan each summer.  The Foundation and the Camp inspire boys and girls ages 5-18 to discover and develop their personal best, to seek balance in mental, physical, social and spiritual living and to make a positive difference in their communities and in the world. 

Funding for Leadership Camp scholarships is provided by the annual Sunrise at Sunset Fund Raising Auction whch will be held  Friday, May 2, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.,in the Umerley Hall of the Rocky River Civic Center.

West Shore Career-Tech's Student Awards

West Shore Career-Technical District Outstanding Student Award recipients were honored by the Rotary Club of Lakewood and Rocky River at its noon luncheon on March 10 at the Don Umerley Civic Center.

The 15 students, top performers in their Career-Technical programs, were chosen for exemplary accomplishments in the classroom, school activities, clubs, athletics and service in the community. Each student exemplifies traits of leadership, dedication, responsibility, caring, community involvement, and initiative.

Westshore Young Leaders Rally

While many high school students continue to engage in unhealthy, high-risk behaviors, the fact remains that a majority of youth are choosing not to use.  Over 100 high school students representing Bay Village, Rocky River, Fairview Park, Lakewood and Westlake braved the cold to attend the 4th Annual Westshore Young Leaders High School Lock In in late February at the Westlake Recreation Center.

The lock-in is the Westshore Young Leaders high school signature event. Westlake’s SADD students took the reins to orchestrate a fun-filled evening.  The group brought students from Brecksville/Broadview Heights High School to perform the play "The pHarming Effects".

Magnificat Dance Team Wins National Title

The Magnificat Dance Team competed at the AmeriDance Winter Open Nationals in Columbus, Ohio on February 15 and brought home another National Grand Championship title and trophy. The team competed in 13 team and ensemble dances, and 15 solo performances, winning first place in many of those competitions. And besides winning the Grand Champion title, the team was awarded the Spirit Award, which honors sportsmanship and work ethic.

West Shore Career Tech's Work Ethic Awards

The West Shore Career-Technical District’s 2014 Outstanding Work Ethic Award winners were honored at a breakfast at Brennan’s Catering & Banquet Center on February 21. The Lakewood Chamber of Commerce and the Lakewood/Rocky River Sunrise Rotary Club welcomed nearly 100 Chamber members, Rotarians, school and school district administrators and principals, members of The Lakewood Board of Education, students, parents, and guests to the 8th annual awards event. Fifteen West Shore Career-Tech students, one representing each program at West Shore, were recognized for demonstrating professionalism, responsibility, and integrity in the workplace.

Rotary Accepting Scholarship Applications

The Lakewood/Rocky River Rotary Foundation is offering grants for study in any accredited post-high school educational institution. Three grants of $2,500 and one grant of $1,000 will be awarded toward the cost of one year’s tuition. Applications must be received by 3 p.m. on Monday, March 17. The awards will be presented on June 9.
