A Unique Offering: Drive-Thru Ashes

One Rocky River church brought itself to the curb to serve Ash Wednesday commuters with the mark of the cross, signifying the beginning of Lent, the Christian season of repentance.

Ignoring the bone-chilling cold and icy footing, Rocky River United Methodist Church's Rev. Dan Bogre and Pastor Paul Bennett went car to car during the morning and evening rush hours on Ash Wednesday (February 10) to serve individuals heading to work, parents taking kids to school, and anyone else who happened to drive by.

Volunteers stood along the street with signs announcing the offer of ashes, a personal prayer, and a Lenten blessing.

God's Oasis: The Monastery of the Poor Clares

The Poor Clares Monastery is hidden by trees and shrubs, but if you pass by very slowly, you’ll be able to glimpse the lovely 108-year-old building at 3501 Rocky River Drive. This is the first permanent foundation of the Poor Clares in the US. The regal Georgian brick building with the 12 symmetrically-placed arched windows and roof cupolas is an architectural treasure. There is also a private cloistered garden and a cemetery for deceased nuns.

The Resurrection of West Park's St. Patrick's Parish

We were dealt an unimaginable shock several years ago when the Catholic Diocese decided that St. Patrick’s should close. Our beloved St. Patrick’s Parish at the corner of Rocky River Drive and Puritas Avenue, a beacon in our community for 163 years was closing.

The best moments of our lives were at St. Patrick’s. We made life-long friends, celebrated New Year’s Eve in Thorpe Hall, watched the boy’s ball games and the girls marching in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. This institution gave us so much. It was and is the fabric of our neighborhood.

And then a miracle happened. St. Patrick’s would reopen! Now we are a large parish family again, but there are a few empty pews waiting to be filled.

Raise High the Roof Beam: Mel and Berdie

Every Sunday morning Mel Hakola stands at the front of the auditorium of the Christian Science Church in Rocky River. He leads the congregation in three hymns during the service and sings a solo, accompanied by his organist Berdie d’Aliberti.

“The church has a wonderful atmosphere,” said Mel. “It’s a fabulous place to sing.”

Berdie plays a Schantz organ, manufactured in Orrville, Ohio, from a sunlen nook beside the reader’s platform. “It’s a small instrument, but it’s an excellent pipe organ,” she said. “And it's perfect for the space.”
