Free Antiques Appraisal Fair

Rocky River Public Library and the City of Rocky River will cosponsor the ninth annual Antiques Appraisal Fair as part of the city’s annual River Days celebration on Sunday, July 10 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Don Umerley Civic Center.  The center is located at 21016 Hilliard Boulevard on the city hall campus complex.

The Antiques Appraisal Fair features six local experts who will speak with you individually about your antiques and collectibles.

Authors of “Expect a Miracle” at RRPL

Meet the authors of “Expect a Miracle: A Mother/Son Asperger Journey of Determination and Triumph” when Sandy and David Petrovic visit Rocky River Public Library on May 12 at 7:00 p.m. The authors share ideas, hope, and lessons learned—not only for persons on the Asperger’s/Autism spectrum, but also for anyone experiencing any learning differences or hardships. 

David Petrivic is a 22-year-old author, actor, singer and motivational speaker. Sandy Petrovic, RN, BSN, his mother and coauthor, will provide insight into understanding and appreciating life with Asperger’s Syndrome.

My first adventure to Europe began in Switzerland in 2013 with family.  During a get-together in a penthouse overlooking the beautiful Mount Pilatus, my cousin, who owns an IT company, started talking to me about “wiffey.”  As he was talking, my brain was running, “Wiffey, what is wiffey?  I should know this.”

The Rocky River Public Library is a Community Partner with the Cleveland International Film Festival for the presentation of  “Trenk, The Little Knight” on Saturday, April 9 at 11:30 a.m. and Sunday, April 10 at 3:50 p.m. at Tower City Cinemas.

"Trenk, The Little Knight" is a family friendly, animated tale showing us that boys and girls who aren’t afraid to dream big can achieve anything. The film is based on best-selling novels by Kirsten Boie.

Join author D. M. Pulley for a discussion of her book, “The Dead Key,” on Thursday, September 10, at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium. The author will join us to talk about the book and answer questions.

Pulley’s “The Dead Key” was the Grand Prize Winner of the 2014 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award. “Inside View,” Rocky River Public Library’s lively news and events publication has won the American Library Association’s award for best newsletter. The annual PR Xchange Awards recognize the very best public relations materials produced by libraries across the country in the past year. Winners were chosen based on content, originality, and design by a team of experts in public relations, graphic design, communications, and marketing. Nearly 375 entries in print and electronic formats were submitted from over 100 institutions including public, academic, school, state, and special libraries.

RRPL Accepting Food for Fines

For every canned or boxed non-perishable food item donated at Rocky River Public Library, patrons’ fines will be reduced by $1.00, up to a maximum of $10.00.  The Library’s “Food for Fines” program is in effect February 2 through February 28.  This is the sixth consecutive year that the Library has sponsored a “Food for Fines” drive.

The “Food for Fines” program applies only to fines and fees owed to Rocky River Public Library. This does not apply to payment of any fines that were made prior to February 2.

March 5 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.   Come and enjoy the musical duo Strawberry Sunday. Avant-garde flutist Kimberly Zaleski and cellist Trevor Kazarian, classically trained musicians from Cleveland Institute of Music, will perform original songs of alternative rock, improvisatory jazz and classical form. Influenced by Cleveland Orchestra, Radiohead and The Beatles—a sweet and passionate blend of musical styles with jamming high energy and beat-boxing swing. Jamie L. Mason Appointed Director of RRPL

The Rocky River Public Library Board of Trustees recently announced that Jamie L. Mason is the new director of the library. “I am very pleased to announce that the Board of Trustees appointed Jamie Mason as director,” said Rocky River Public Library Board President Audra Bednarski. "We have great confidence in Jamie's leadership skills, his vision for the library, and his concern for our staff,” she said.

Mason has been the library’s interim director since July 2014. Prior to this, Mason served as the library’s deputy director since 2009.

RRPL Honored as American Star Library

For the fourth consecutive year, Rocky River Public Library has been selected as one of the best libraries in the nation in Library Journal’s 2014 “Index of Public Library Service.” The rating identifies 258 Star libraries, based on data from more than 7,500 public libraries nationwide.

“We are honored to be chosen again as a Star Library,” said Library Director Jamie L. Mason.

The Women’s Committee of Rocky River Public Library hosts an ongoing book sale in the library's lobby. Recent bestsellers, Pulitzer-prize winning novels, children’s popular and classic literature, as well as a host of nonfiction(ranging from cookbooks and travel guides to antiques and decorating) are snapped up almost as soon as they hit the shelves.  DVDs, CDs and audiobooks abound! Prices generally range from 50¢ to $1.00 for new and nearly new items that have been donated to the library.

New Trustees Appointed to RRPL Board

Jodi Penwell has been appointed by the Rocky River Board of Education to a seven-year term on the Rocky River Public Library board of trustees. She takes over the position vacated by William Henson, who retired from the board after 14 years of service. In addition, John Hosek was also sworn in at the library’s August 27th board meeting to fill the unexpired term of Betsy Lanzen. Hosek’s term ends in June 2018.

Author Nicholas Dawidoff at RRPL on September 11

Rocky River Public Library and Joseph-Beth Booksellers present Nicholas Dawidoff, the author of  “Collision Low Crossers: A Year Inside the Turbulent World of NFL Football,” the highly acclaimed case study of the NFL, on September 11 at 7:00 p.m. at Rocky River Public Library.

Dawidoff takes you behind the scenes of the NY Jets, sharing fascinating stories about the players and coaches, including Browns current head coach Mike Pettine.

Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase. Joseph-Beth Booksellers is donating a percentage of all book sales to the library.

Tour the Cowan Pottery Museum

The Cowan Pottery Museum at Rocky River Public Library can be viewed at any time during regular library hours.  You can also arrange for a free guided tour for yourself or for a group of 20 or less.  To schedule a tour, please contact Curator/Historian, Lauren Hansgen, at 440- 895-3763.   The museum holds the largest publicly owned collection of Cowan Pottery in the world, a distinctive form of American art pottery produced in Rocky River from 1920-31.

Library Mural Project

A team of enthusiastic and talented teens recently worked over three days at Rocky River Public Library with an artist from the Progressive Arts Alliance to learn the basic principles of design and mural-making. As a result, they created the dynamic mural now on display in the Teen Area. The program was a great opportunity for students to learn about visual art to create a large-scale artwork.

Antiques Appraisal Fair

On Sunday, July 13, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., area appraisers will provide a free informal appraisal for two items per person.

This is the sixth year that the Rocky River Library has organized the Antiques Appraisal Fairin conjunction with the City of Rocky River’s “River Days.”  The fair will be held in the Don Umerley Civic Center.

Summer Reading Programs at RRPL

Summer is the perfect time to read for FUN! Sign up for Rocky River Public Library's Summer Reading Programs beginning June 16. To be part of the Children’s Summer Reading Program, come in, register and pick up your free summer reading packet to start the summer reading fun! Pre-readers can join in, too, and have friends and family read to them. No reporting is required. Experienced readers may draw a picture, write a summary, or present a brief oral report for every fifth book they read (only five reports total).

All teens in grades 7 through 12 are invited to participate in the Teen Summer Reading Program.  Sign up at the Reference Desk and receive a free gift.  Then start reading (or listening to audiobooks) and fill out a slip for every title you read. Use those slips to enter drawings for awesome weekly prizes.

Audra Bednarski Re-elected President of RRPL Board

Audra Bednarski has been re-elected to serve a one-year term as the president of the Rocky River Public Library board of trustees. Bednarski, a resident of Rocky River since 1994, works with River Snow Management, LLC in Rocky River.  She has served as a trustee on the library board since 2009.
