Upcoming Programs and Events at Rocky River Public Library

After School Teen Scene takes place most days after school from 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Please check the calendar in the Teen Room for activities and locations. Activities range from video and board games to movies, anime, and crafts. Snacks are a staple. Grades 7 and up.

May 5 at 7:00 p.m.   Michael Hubbard, Rocky River resident and owner of Hubbard Insurance Agency, will present Addressing Your Personal Insurance Needs.  He will discuss home, car and liability insurance, giving you a clear understanding of what each coverage consists of and what you may personally need to protect your assets. Get all of your questions answered.

May 7 at 9:30 a.m.   At Meditation Basics, you will get a brief overview of the benefits of meditation, followed by a guided meditation session with instructor Elaine Hullihen.  No experience necessary. Registration required.

May 7 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.   Enjoy a Free Comic Book Day Craft. Fans of all ages can celebrate Free Comic Book Day and get a free comic book, while supplies last. Stop by the Teen Room in the afternoon for crafts using recycled comic books. Family friendly. 

May 9 at 6:30 p.m.   Join us on  for “Theeb,” a 2014 a Jordanian Arabic drama, as we continue our Indie International Film Fest, featuring selections from the world’s top film festivals.  This story focuses on a young Bedouin boy who must survive in the wide-open desert during World War I. Please note that films shown have not been rated and should be assumed to have mature content.  Free popcorn!

May 11 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.   How to Find a Summer Job  will tell you where to start to land employment! Kelly MacLean from College Recruiting Specialists® will be here to offer expert advice for finding, getting, and keeping your first job. You’ll learn everything from identifying employment opportunities to applying and interviewing for a job, as well as how to dress for success. Grades 9 and up. Registration required.

May 12 at 7:00 p.m.   Meet the authors of “Expect a Miracle: A Mother/Son Asperger Journey of Determination and Triumph” when Sandy and David Petrovic visit the Library. The authors share ideas, hope, and lessons learned—not only for persons on the Asperger’s/Autism spectrum, but also for anyone experiencing any learning differences or hardships. David Petrivic is a 22-year-old author, actor, singer and motivational speaker. Sandy Petrovic, RN, BSN, his mother and coauthor, will provide insight into understanding and appreciating life with Asperger’s Syndrome.  Q&A will be followed by a book sale and signing. Refreshments will be served by the Friends of the Rocky River Public Library.

May 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.    Come and learn at the Annual Cowan Pottery Symposium.  The Symposium is an ideal opportunity for those who are interested in Cowan Pottery, local history, antiques, collecting, and the arts in general to network with like-minded people.  The day includes speakers, meals, scholarship presentation, and a raffle.  Cost for the symposium is $22.00.  For more details, check www.rrpl.org/cowan, or contact Curator Lauren Hansgen at 895-3763 or l.hansgen@rrpl.org before the registration deadline on May 5.

May 18 at 9:30 a.m.   Join us for the next Computer Breakfast Series about YouTube. More video content is uploaded to YouTube in just 60 days than all three of the big U.S. TV networks have created in 60 years! Find out what types of content can be found on YouTube, how to search for topics, follow channels, and tips and tricks for using the website.

May 20 at 2:00 p.m.   Why not come to the library to Sip, Snack, and Craft while you get into the knitting groove. You can bring your own project or select a suggested pattern from the Calendar of Events. Registration required.

May 21 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.   Are you crazy about Legos®?  Then drop in for the Guild of the Brick for ages 5 and older. We provide the Legos®, you bring the imagination. 

May 24, 25 and 31 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.   Do you need a place to study for finals? Exam Cram at the Library is the place to be! Bring your books and study partners, and we will provide a quiet spot and snacks. Grades 8 and up. 

May 24 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.    Basics Of Estate Planning will be presentedby Benjamin F. Farah, attorney and counselor at law.  Learn about the basics of estate planning through wills, avoiding probate, trusts, general powers of attorney, living wills, and health care powers of attorneys.

May 26 at 7:00 p.m.   Seeking Better Home Care? will be presented by Ellen Minerd, CNP. Learn what you can do to provide better care for a homebound loved one, neighbor, or even yourself from Rocky River nurse practitioner Ellen Minerd. Acting as a patient liaison, she and the nurses in her business, Daughters with Degrees, work with primary care physicians in helping to secure the best care possible.

May 27 at 12:00 p.m.   Watch a Movie Matinee featuring a popular new release. Popcorn and lemonade provided!

May 31 at 7:00 p.m.   Coloring For Adults  is a relaxing activity. Treat yourself to some quiet time to color and enjoy music. Coloring sheets and colored pencils will be provided. Registration required.

The Library will be closed for Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 8. The Library will also be closed on Thursday, May 19 for staff training. It will be closed for the Memorial Day Observance on Sunday, May 29 and Monday, May 30.
